Description
In the early 1700s in South Texas Apache raided from the north, deadly diseases spread from Mexico, and drought lingered. Survival lay in the Spanish missions. By entering a mission, the native inhabitants foreswore their traditional life to become Spanish, accepting a new religion and pledging fealty to a distant and unseen king. Furtherest south of San Antonio's five missions is San Francisco de la Espada. A familiar symbol of Mission Espada is the chapel's unusual doorway. Although many believe the broken line of its outer arc is due to the stones having been improperly placed, it's style could have been influenced by the Visigothic style church of San Juan Batista built in 661 AD in northen Spain, which has similarities to Espada's chapel.
