Description
San Juan Capistrano began its first life as Mission San Jose de los Nazonis, founded in 1716 to serve the Nazoni and Nadaco Indians near Nacagdoches in what is now considered East Texas. Three years later it was abandoned and was eventually reestablished on the banks of the San Antonio River in March of 1731. It was then renamed in honor of a recently canonized saint, John of Capistrano, an Italian theologian.
This image is actually a combination of two separate images - San Juan Capistrano and an arched gateway from another San Antonio Mission.
