Description
This is the first caterpillar we have seen this year. Found it on the Rue plant that is growing in our backyard and as you can see, it had just molted. As the caterpillar grows, it must shed its old skin. It may molt up to five times, depending on its species, the weather conditions and the availability of food. Growth spurts between the molts are called instars. Some caterpillars eat their old skin at the end of the molting process and may change color or physical appearance with each successive molt.
