Description
This image reminds me of the old hymn "When I Survey The Wondrous Cross".
When I survey the wondrous cross
On which the Prince of glory died,
My richest gain I count but loss,
And pour contempt on all my pride.
Were the whole realm of nature mine,
That were a present far too small;
Love so amazing, so divine,
Demands my soul, my life, my all.
This beautiful hymn was written by Isaac Watts. Isaac Watts was born July 17, 1674 at Southampton, England, the eldest of nine children. His father was a Dissenter from the Anglican Church and on at least one occasion was thrown in jail for not following the Church of England. Isaac followed his father's strongly biblical faith.
Watts's 1707 publication of "Hymns and Spiritual Songs" contained what would become some of the most popular English hymns of all time, such as "When I Survey the Wondrous Cross." It was a daring move at that time because it was the practice of almost every congregation of the Church of England to sing only Old Testament psalms in their public worship.
